The 1907 Rotch Edition of the Inspired Theological Works of Emanuel Swedenborg

The Rotch Edition of Emanuel Swedenborg's inspired works was produced with the support of a bequest from the estate of Lydia Rotch.  The history of this and other translations of Swedenborg's teachings is found in a Reviser Preface inserted at the beginning of Volume 1 of Arcana Coelestia of the 1905 translation. (The situation became confused when the 1905 Reviser Preface was reprinted in the 1956 standard edition Arcana Volume 1, shown here (scroll down), even though it was outdated and in part incorrect.)

A bundled set of the Rotch edition volumes has been released in Kindle format, complete with links for the doctrinal passages. There are two versions of the Kindle book. The more expensive "expanded version" includes Apocalypse Explained, which was not among the works Swedenborg himself published  (See Which of Swedenborg's books are Divine revelation? ) and was not included in the Rotch set.* The less expensive version of the Kindle book does not include Apocalypse Explained.  A translation of The Book of Jasher is also included and it too was not included in the Rotch (or other collections of Sswedenborg's work).

The Rotch edition is of interest today because it was produced under the auspices of a major publisher, The Riverside Press of  Houghton Mifflin, which, presumably, would result in an editorially polished piece of work. The Kindle version apparently has the same goal since it states that it is updated to modern English. However it is not a new translation.

The Rotch volumes reproduced here have been scanned, but not significantly proofread.  However, these pages are sufficiently clean to serve the purpose of  illustrating the Rotch's editorial quality for comparison purposes with other translations.

The Writings are organized by paragraph/section number. In the Rotch edition there are also page numbers, which are referred to in the Tables of Content.

*There is one minor exception to this rule. The Rotch edition includes the Appendix to The White Horse, which was based on an unpublished letter of Swedenborg's to the Swedish Academy of Sciences.
